Een grootschalige productie en tevens de openingsvoorstelling van het Holland Festival 2019.\u00a0Met 44 zenders en bergen in-ears een behoorlijke klus. En omdat het de opening was meteen ook voor bijzonder publiek: de koning en de koningin! Ook Prinses Beatrix kwam verderop in de reeks de voorstelling bezoeken. Met een fantastische crew hebben we iets heel moois neergezet in Theater Amsterdam, wat bijna geen theater meer genoemd kan worden. Speciaal voor deze gelegenheid werd er een aparte tribune en een 50 meter breed podium in de hal gebouwd. De muziek is van Phillip Miller \u2013 met wie Kentridge al vaker samenwerkte \u2013 en Thuthuka Sibisi. Gregory Maqoma tekent voor de choreografie. Centraal staan de bijna twee miljoen Afrikanen die tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog als dragers zijn gebruikt door de Britten, Fransen en Duitsers, en die een groot deel van de slachtoffers vertegenwoordigen \u2013 een tragisch verhaal met een historische betekenis dat grotendeels onverteld is gebleven. Kentridge brengt in deze unieke voorstelling een internationale groep performers samen met dansers, zangers en muzikanten, schaduwspel en filmprojecties.
